Okra and Paneer Garam Masala

Okra and Paneer Garam Masala. Lightly seared paneer cheese with crunchy okra coated in a rich garam masala. Okra is a green vegetable (also known as lady fingers) that's packed with antioxidants and folic acid, reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes. It's known to have a hefty amount of fibre so it'll keep you fuller for longer. And paneer... this is a hearty and meaty cheese that's rich in protein and improves digestion. Boxes ticked all around.



Serves 4


  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter ghee
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 1 pack of paneer, cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 16 okra, cut into 1 inches
  • 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp Patak's garam masala or Natco's garam masala powder
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 can of chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • black pepper
  • small handful of coriander, chopped

What to do:

  1. Heat the oil in a large pot, then add the garlic, ginger and onion. Mix and cook till the onion softens
  2. Add the garam masala and stir continuously for a minute then add the chopped tomatoes, bay leaf, salt and black pepper to taste
  3. Reduce to a simmer, then leave it to cook for 15 minutes
  4. In a non stick pan and on a low heat, lightly cook the paneer so that it's golden brown in colour then set aside
  5. Add the okra to the garam masala and cook for 3 minutes then
  6. Add the paneer, mix and use coriander as a garnish
  7. Serve with basmati rice and roti paratha
